Industrial.

Process loads, heavy motor starting and demand charges. For these sites, the load profile often costs more than the energy consumed.

Load characteristics

An industrial site is defined by its process. Shift patterns, batch cycles and motor starts produce an irregular load profile, and network charges are structured around precisely those peaks.

  • Demand charges set by a few excursions per month, not by total consumption
  • Motor starting and inrush that dominate the short-term current profile
  • Power factor and harmonic distortion penalties from drives and rectifier loads
  • Shift patterns and batch cycles that make the load calendar-driven rather than weather-driven
  • Process criticality that varies by production line; some interruptions cause minor disruption, while others result in the loss of an entire batch
  • On-site thermal or cogeneration assets that have to be dispatched alongside the electrical system

Live

Peak demand reduction

A two-shift process load peaking at 3 MW on live Western Sydney weather, with a 3 MW array and an 8 MWh battery. Because the network charge is determined by the highest half-hour demand of the month, the key metric when resizing the battery is peak grid draw cut, rather than total energy.

Platform modules

Engine configuration for this application area

Resource acquisition
Site resource history combined with metered process data, aligned to shift and production calendars.
Design & sizing
PV sized against daytime process load, storage sized against demand-charge exposure and power-quality requirements rather than energy alone.
Digital twin
Process load modelled by shift and batch cycle, storage dispatched for peak shaving and power-factor support, with motor-start events resolved.
Feasibility
Savings decomposed into energy, demand charge and power-factor components, with year-by-year trajectory across the asset life.
Data export
Dispatch and power-quality logs, and exportable series for real-time simulation and protection studies.
Design basis

Standards and criteria applied

  • Wiring rules, cable selection and current-carrying capacity for industrial installations
  • Switchgear and controlgear assemblies, and protection coordination including motor protection
  • Harmonic and power-quality limits for equipment connected to the distribution system
  • Grid connection of inverter energy systems, and battery energy storage installation and safety
  • Reliability assessment methods for industrial and commercial power systems
  • Emergency and critical-supply provisions for the parts of the process that require them

The applicable set is confirmed at kick-off and depends on jurisdiction, connection point and the reliability target agreed with you.
